Maple Red

In 1886 pharmacist John Pemberton created Coca-Cola in Atlanta. Its eye-catching red came from early barrel paint and became inseparable from the brand. Today Coca-Cola Red is one of the world's most recognized colors.

From British Columbia's towering cedars to Vancouver Island's coastal rainforests, Pacific Green defines the West Coast's visual character. For the Haida and other Indigenous peoples, forest and ocean are cultural and spiritual roots.

In 1969 Ettore Sottsass and Perry King designed the Valentine typewriter, upending the staid image of office equipment with a bright red plastic shell. It became an icon of Italian Radical Design and Pop aesthetics, turning an industrial product into a fashion statement.

Venetian Red was the signature color of the Venetian school. Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese used this warm red in countless masterpieces. Titian's reds were so famous they were called "Titian Red"—his women always had red hair and red dresses. Venice itself is a red city—Gothic palazzo ochre-red walls reflect warm tones in canal waters.

Vermilion represents life's power and protection from evil in Japanese tradition. The most iconic Japanese visual symbol—the torii gate—is almost always vermilion. Fushimi Inari's "Thousand Torii Gates" form a breathtaking red tunnel. Shinto believes vermilion wards off evil, used in shrines, amulets, and bridges.
