From Chinese imperial yellow and cinnabar to French bleu de France and Versailles gold, royal colors were never merely aesthetic—they embodied rank, divinity, and national identity.
Imperial Yellow
Imperial Yellow was the exclusive color of Chinese emperors. Since Tang Dynasty founder Li Yuan, yellow became imperial. Zhao Kuangyin was draped in yellow at Chenqiao, founding the Song Dynasty. The Qing restricted bright yellow to the emperor, empress, and dowager. The Forbidden City's yellow roof tiles symbolize imperial centrality.
Cinnabar Red
Cinnabar is one of China's oldest pigments, used for pottery decoration since the Neolithic Age. After Qin Shi Huang unified China, cinnabar became the standard color for official seals, giving rise to the term "vermillion brush" for imperial decrees.
Bleu de France
Bleu de France is one of France's national symbolic colors. In the Middle Ages, French royalty chose blue for heraldry—"Azure semé de fleurs-de-lis or." This was unusual, as blue was once considered a "barbarian" color. King Louis IX (Saint Louis) first used blue in royal arms. The tricolor flag's blue represents freedom and revolution.
Versailles Gold
Versailles Gold is the iconic color of French Baroque. Louis XIV's finance minister Colbert said, "Gold is the language of power." Versailles used staggering amounts of gold leaf—gilded statues in the Hall of Mirrors, gold reliefs in the throne room. The "Sun King" title itself implies gold—gold like the sun, center of the universe, as Louis was center of France.
Korean Red
Korean Red is the South color in the Five Directions system, representing fire and summer. In Korean culture, red wards off evil—village entrances hang red cloth, and newborns wear red. The South Korean flag's upper red half represents yang (positive).
Korean Cobalt Blue
Korean Cobalt Blue is the East color in Korea's "Five Directions Color" (Obangsaek) system. Derived from Chinese Five Elements theory but with unique Korean characteristics—blue (east), red (south), yellow (center), white (west), black (north). Korean architecture, hanbok, and even court cuisine follow this system.
Imperial Purple Gold
Purple held special status in Chinese history. The "Purple Star" was the emperor's star, and the "Purple Forbidden City" the imperial palace. Duke Huan of Qi loved purple so much that the entire nation wore it, making purple silk five times more expensive than white.
Ru sky cyan, blue-and-white cobalt, Iznik blue, Persian glaze—ceramics are humanity's most enduring way to preserve color. Mineral pigments locked beneath glaze survive millennia.
Persian blue glaze traveled the Silk Road to China, birthing Yuan blue-and-white porcelain; Japanese indigo later influenced European Impressionism. Blue is the most mysterious thread connecting East and West.
Saffron represents Hindu courage, Krishna blue symbolizes infinity, Siamese gold radiates Buddha's light, and vermilion torii guard Shinto shrines. Color is faith made visible.
